Erdington Academy and Graham Construction – Employability Skills Partnership

Developing Employability Skills Through Strong Employer Partnerships

Students in Year 11 have been developing their employability skills through the successful completion of AQA Unit Awards, supporting their readiness for the world of work.

As part of this work, the school has been proud to collaborate with Graham Construction, our partner business through the West Midlands Combined Authority Careers Hub programme, where they act as our Enterprise Advisor. This partnership has provided students with valuable insight into real-world employment opportunities and the skills employers are seeking.

Pam Green, Social Impact Business Partner at Graham Construction, visited the school to speak to the entire Year 11 cohort about apprenticeship opportunities within the company. Her presentation helped students gain a clearer understanding of career pathways into construction and related industries, raising aspirations and increasing awareness of future options.

In addition, The Bridge class completed their World of Work Award by researching Graham Construction and learning more about the organisation’s work and values. As part of this experience, students visited Birmingham Children’s Hospital, where they were able to see the significant impact Graham Construction has had in supporting facilities that benefit young people across Birmingham.

During the visit, students were given a guided tour by Colin Robinson, Site Manager, who explained the different roles involved in the project and highlighted how teamwork, safety, and technical skills come together on a live construction site. This real-world insight helped students connect their learning to practical workplace experiences.

These opportunities have reinforced classroom learning while helping students understand how employability skills translate into real-life outcomes and positive community impact.

We would like to thank Graham Construction, Pam Green, and Colin Robinson for their continued support and commitment to inspiring our students and strengthening links between education and industry.
