FMAT praised for its work with Early Career Teachers

Fairfax Multi-Academy Trust has received a glowing report about how well it develops and supports the next generation of teachers.

An expert from Star Teaching School Hub Network visited Fairfax in December 2024 to review and quality assure the work done to ensure that Early Career Teachers (ECTs) are getting the excellent deal they deserve.

Kyle Bailey, the Teaching School Hub Lead, met two members of Trust staff and four of Fairfax’s ECTs and was delighted with what he saw during his visit.

‘Fairfax School and the wider Multi-Academy Trust clearly prioritise ECT development and have years of experience supporting Early Career Teachers,’ said Mr Bailey.

‘All the ECTs spoke about the great deal of support that the school provides. The ECTs corroborated the fact that the Trust heavily invests in ECTs and that the school considers the needs of individual ECTs.

‘This includes the opportunities to network with ECTs from across the trust and to collaborate with colleagues in subject-specialisms across schools.

‘All the ECTs are aware of their progress and mentioned how the Academy and Trust has supported them in understanding their progress and how to improve.’

It is sometimes the case that ECTs can feel like poor relations in schools. Mr Bailey was keen to point out that ECTs at Fairfax do not suffer this experience.

‘Overall, the ECTs were extremely positive about the support they were receiving at all levels: their mentor, the Academy and the Trust.

‘The ECTs mentioned that while they were getting more support than what was required, they nevertheless never felt that they were a ‘lesser’ member of staff.’
