£34,000 grant secured for new drama trip in 2027

Year 10 drama students, from Erdington Academy, can look forward to another international trip next year, after the academy’s head of drama secured £34,000 of funding.

In March, a group of 30 students jetted off to Athens where they were able to immerse themselves in a rich programme designed to deepen their understanding of Greek theatre, history and culture.

The educational visit was fully funded through the Government’s Turing Scheme, giving students the chance to experience global learning far beyond the classroom. For some it was the first time they had been abroad.

Head of Drama at Erdington Academy, Mrs Love, said she felt like she had won the lottery when she found out she had secured another £34,000 from the scheme – allowing her to plan a second trip for early 2027.

“It is such a wonderful opportunity because it allows us to extend these life-changing experiences to even more students. Seeing the impact our first Turing Grant had, especially for students who had never travelled abroad, was incredibly moving.

She added: “For their families, knowing their child can experience another country, a new culture and create lifelong memories is incredibly special. Seeing the confidence, friendships and aspirations that grew from that experience is exactly why opportunities like this are so important.

“Four of the students who travelled to Greece had never been abroad before, and they still talk about the trip to this day. They often tell me it was one of the best experiences of their lives, that they look at the photos we took every day and they tell me that they’ll never forget it.”

Erdington Academy is part of Fairfax Multi-Academy Trust, with a team able to support schools with grant applications.

The Trust’s Income and Grant Generation Officer, Tracey Stevens, said: “We are continually inspired by the dedication of our staff to go above and beyond in enriching the lives of our students.”

“The trip to Greece was a once in a life-time experience. The visit enhanced their drama curriculum while helping them develop valuable life skills, including resilience, teamwork and cultural awareness.”
